Maya Colour-Coded Symptom Checker

The Story Behind Dr. Maya and Dr. Maya GPT

In 2003, I was working as a salaried General Practitioner (GP) employed by the Surrey Primary Care Trust (PCT) in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). I was assigned to a groundbreaking "Pilot Nurse-Led Practice," where nurses were tasked with providing medical care to registered patients. My role was to act as the GP, trainer, and assessor for nurse prescribers and practitioners.

At the time, the practice was managed by a community-trained nurse who served as the manager, prescriber, and primary provider of medical services. She was essentially acting as the "family doctor" (GP). Her responsibilities included taking patient histories, conducting examinations, offering advice, and prescribing medication. She was also listed as an emergency care provider for Thames Doc, an after-hours service. Initially, I thought this would work because most GP consultations involve minor issues that don't require a doctor’s intervention.

However, as I worked in the practice, I began to notice serious problems. Nurses, while highly skilled, are not trained to the same level as doctors. They lack the years of supervised training that junior doctors undergo, which teaches them to clinically examine patients, diagnose conditions early, and prescribe safely. Junior doctors are trained to "do no harm," understanding that medications can sometimes cause complications rather than cures.

The Challenges of a Nurse-Led Model

I observed that nurses were frequently misdiagnosing viral infections as bacterial and prescribing antibiotics unnecessarily. Many of the practice's patients were immigrants from Pakistan, often with limited literacy and fluency in English. These patients were confused about how a community nurse could claim to be a doctor. While they appreciated the nurses’ accessibility, they also noted that nurses were not bound by the same ethical guidelines as doctors, such as the Hippocratic Oath.

Another issue arose from how the practice prioritized appointments. The receptionist, under instruction from the nurse manager, directed patients to the nurse prescriber first, regardless of the nature of their symptoms. Since the receptionist wasn’t trained to differentiate between serious and minor symptoms, there were delays in diagnosing critical conditions, leading to complications and, at times, poor outcomes.

As a doctor, I felt a deep responsibility to address these issues. I couldn’t stand by while patients were misdiagnosed, mistreated, or left vulnerable due to systemic failures.

The Birth of Dr. Maya

I realized that the receptionist needed a simple, reliable system to distinguish between minor and serious symptoms. This inspired me to create a tool using color codes: red for symptoms requiring a doctor (STOP), and green for cases that could go to a nurse (GO). While this innovation was simple, it aimed to prevent delays and ensure patients received the appropriate level of care.

Unfortunately, the nurse manager dismissed my efforts and actively resisted my progress, even going so far as to create obstacles for me. Despite this resistance and the mental and physical toll it took, I was determined to make a difference.

Expanding the Vision

Driven by my belief in improving healthcare, I refined my system to include four colors, to help non-medically trained people, crossing barriers of language, nations, and finacial restrains to get the best updated information using Artificial Intelligence (ChatGPT).

  • Red: Indicates a doctor is needed.
  • Green: Suggests a nurse can handle the issue.
  • Yellow: Refers patients to self diagnose or ask pharmacist for advice.
  • Blue: Flags potential infections requiring isolation to protect families and healthcare workers.

This expanded system laid the foundation for Dr. Maya, a tool designed to help patients and healthcare providers identify and address symptoms accurately. Over time, this evolved into Dr. Maya GPT, an AI-powered system that combines my vision with cutting-edge technology to empower patients and healthcare systems worldwide.

Why Trust Dr. Maya GPT and the Colour-Coded Symptoms System Over Websites and Apps Claiming to Offer Medical Advice?

Dr. Maya GPT represents a leap forward in how healthcare decisions are supported, blending the latest technology with the innovative colour-coded system developed by Dr. Kadiyali Srivatsa in 2003.

Intellectual Property Protected

Poster Presentation, and Maya Fridge Magnet was exhibited in "Future Health Care" organised by The BMJ Quality Care Exhibition, in Business Centre, London in 2011. Information is Copyright Protected, and Design Patent protected in 2004, and so changing the colour, and advice is detrimental to patient saftey and is infringing Dr Kadiyali Srivatsa's Intellectual Property.

Here’s why trusting Dr. Maya GPT over other medical apps and websites ensures a safer, more accurate, and patient-centered approach to health management:

1. Rapid Processing of Information

Dr. Maya GPT processes vast amounts of data instantly, drawing from trusted sources like medical journals, research papers, and global health databases. This eliminates the delays humans face when researching. For example, while a human might take hours or days to analyse new findings, Dr. Maya GPT integrates updates immediately, ensuring accurate, up-to-date recommendations.

2. Comprehensive Knowledge Integration

Unlike websites and apps that might rely on outdated algorithms or limited datasets, Dr. Maya GPT integrates evidence-based knowledge from multiple disciplines. This holistic approach ensures that every symptom is assessed in context, reducing the risk of overlooking critical details. Dr. Maya GPT is not biased toward any single study or method, ensuring balanced and reliable advice.

3. Real-Time Learning and Adaptation

Medical science evolves rapidly. Dr. Maya GPT adapts in real time to incorporate the latest advancements, enabling it to address even the newest medical challenges like emerging infectious diseases. In contrast, static websites and apps often lag behind, relying on outdated or incomplete information.

4. Harnessing Dr. Srivatsa’s Colour-Coded System

Dr. Maya GPT employs Dr. Srivatsa’s trusted colour-coded system, a framework that categorizes symptoms by urgency:

  • Red: Immediate doctor consultation needed.
  • Yellow: Consult a pharmacist for advice.
  • Green: Safe for nurse-led management.
  • Blue: Potential infection—recommend isolation.

This system ensures patients receive the right care at the right time. For instance, Dr. Maya GPT can:

  • Accurately Categorize Symptoms: Analyse symptom combinations and guide patients to appropriate next steps, from seeking urgent medical help to self-isolation for infectious diseases.
  • Eliminate Subjective Errors: Remove the bias or oversight that might occur in stressful situations, consistently flagging serious conditions with precision.
  • Improve Communication: Enhance doctor-patient understanding by providing a clear, colour-coded framework for symptoms.

5. Error Reduction in Diagnosis

Fatigue, emotional bias, or time constraints can lead doctors or apps to misinterpret symptoms or overlook critical details. Dr. Maya GPT remains consistent and precise, processing information continuously without loss of accuracy. This reduces the risk of diagnostic errors, ensuring safer outcomes for patients.

6. Unbiased and Evidence-Based

Websites and apps often use pre-set algorithms, which can oversimplify or overcomplicate diagnoses, leading to incorrect conclusions. Dr. Maya GPT operates on established medical principles, using unbiased data to provide recommendations that align with the latest global standards.

7. Availability and Accessibility

Unlike apps or websites that might lack real-time support or require a physical consultation, Dr. Maya GPT is available 24/7. This makes it an invaluable tool for urgent queries or guiding patients through critical situations anytime, anywhere.

8. Predictive Analysis for Better Outcomes

By identifying patterns in symptoms and medical history, Dr. Maya GPT can predict possible diagnoses with remarkable accuracy. It considers thousands of similar cases, offering tailored recommendations that go beyond generic advice from typical medical apps or websites.

The Limitations of Traditional Apps and Websites

Websites and apps that claim to diagnose or provide medical advice often fail to address the complexity of human health. They may oversimplify symptoms or provide generic suggestions without considering individual patient contexts. Additionally:

  • Risk of Misdiagnosis: Apps imitating tools like the “French Index of Differential Diagnosis” can lead to devastating complications or even fatalities due to incorrect or incomplete assessments.
  • Monetization Over Safety: Many platforms prioritize monetizing their services over truly addressing patient needs, which can result in harmful advice.
  • Lack of Contextual Understanding: These platforms often miss nuances like symptom combinations or patient history, critical in accurate diagnoses.

Why Dr. Maya GPT Stands Out

Dr. Maya GPT builds on Dr. Srivatsa’s decades of experience and proven system:

  • Designed to Meet Patient Needs: It was created to solve real-world problems and improve diagnostic accuracy, not for profit or mimicry.
  • Patient Safety First: By focusing on belief-based and evidence-backed diagnostics, Dr. Maya GPT prioritizes reducing suffering and saving lives.
